USAC Recap – Nov. 23

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students.

Special Presentations

  • Mark Reyes and Mikaela Saelua of the ASUCLA Board of Directors gave a presentation about their goals for the year, including plans for the North Campus Student Center and increased outreach to students.
  • Fourth-year political science student Jason Youdeem gave a presentation about bringing the Olive Tree Initiative to UCLA. The organization aims promote educated dialogue on campus and will take 20 student leaders and two professors to Israel and Palestine in September 2011.

Officer Reports

  • President Jasmine Hill discussed the aftermath of the UC Board of Regents meeting and also talked about her hope to meet with UC President Mark Yudof. Hill and External Vice President Cristopher Santos attended a Students of Color conference at UCSB this weekend, where Hill was appointed spokesperson.
  • Internal Vice President Stephanie Lucas chaired the Campus Safety Alliance, which convened for the first time in years. It will begin anti-jaywalking campaigns and fund self-defense classes. Lucas also talked about a student group exposition, a mini-activities fair held during the second week of winter quarter.
  • External Vice President Cristopher Santos met with the student regent representative, who will propose two initiatives to allow undocumented students to apply for institutional funding and chancellors to fundraise privately for them.
  • Academic Affairs Commissioner Suza Khy is working with the administration to increase the number of undergraduate general education courses and is hoping to implement the textbook loan program winter quarter.

Agenda

  • Finance Chair Isaac Rose’s contingency allocations were passed 11-0-0.
  • The Student Activities Center will be open until 3 a.m. on Dec. 5-8 and provide free food and Scantrons.
  • During Wednesday and Thursday of 10th week, Kerckhoff will have a 24-hour study lounge and a van service for students leaving after 2 a.m. This service will also be available from Sunday to Thursday during finals week.
