Daily Bruin is here for students

Boy, how does time fly. It was just three years ago that I, a scrawny freshman, was plucked from my suburbia high school and dropped into Metropolis U.

Just a pipsqueak first-year, I kissed my mommy goodbye the Saturday of move-in weekend, and embarked on the voyage that is life at UCLA. Less than 24 hours later, I hiked up to Hedrick Hall to visit a friend on the sixth floor. And it was there that I swiped a Daily Bruin Registration Issue off the newsstand outside Hedrick.

The almost-100 pages, the professional layouts and art, the massive amounts of writing ““ how did they make this, I wondered.

For the whole year, that issue stayed in my top drawer.

I came to UCLA with no plans ““ no plans on a major, no plans on who I’d befriend and certainly no plans to run the Daily Bruin.

But I quickly applied to the Bruin and joined the Sports section. Soon, I was the one helping put together the monstrosity you have in your hands today.

In that time, I found my space at UCLA, one in which I could positively contribute and find meaning.

I found a place at the Daily Bruin.

And it is my hope that the Bruin can find a place with you, be it as the first thing you grab going down Bruin Walk or your browser’s home page. Our new mobile website can be your smart phone’s best friend. And through every medium, we are increasing our efforts to enhance our quality of storytelling. We want to be your bedtime read, your mid-lecture distraction, your dining-hall convo-starter.

Throughout this issue, you will see instances of all this.

There is the video project chronicling the post-grad life of a few UCLA alumni. In the section before that, you will see our package spotlighting part of the lives of UCLA’s foster family-raised students. Our Sports section will never fail to follow the Bruins, wherever they go and whenever they play. Given our print deadlines for this issue, we weren’t able to give you coverage of the weekend’s athletic contests, but the Sports department was working hard this weekend to bring you all the stories on dailybruin.com/sports.

In just a few short weeks, you’ll also get a chance to see the school year’s first issue of prime, the Daily Bruin’s own lifestyle magazine. Within the glossy pages will lie the untold stories of UCLA nostalgia.

As our nameplate says, we have been serving the UCLA community since 1919, a feat I am proud to help extend for at least one more year. Now in our 92nd year of production, I don’t see an end to our service to the community.

The Bruin’s always going to be here for you to give the inside look at UCLA, telling the stories that matter to you. We want to find a place in your UCLA life. And we want to hear from the most important people in the world to us: you, the reader.
