Two teams coming off rain-soaked weekends match up Tuesday as
Pepperdine comes to Westwood to play UCLA.
Weather permitting, of course.
UCLA spent a wet weekend trying to squeeze in all three games
against Pacific. The Bruins managed to fit in only two, barely
missing a third game becoming official before it was called off in
the fifth inning.
Pepperdine’s games on both Saturday and Sunday were also
rained out.
The Bruins (4-3) split the two Pacific games, winning 6-1 Friday
and losing 7-0 Saturday.
Senior Casey Janssen gave up his first run of the season Friday,
after beginning the year with sixteen scoreless innings. The lone
run in 18 innings raised his ERA to a miniscule 0.50.
Despite the minor blemish, he was still stellar, collecting 10
strikeouts in a career-high eight innings. The Bruins used
small-ball to collect their six runs on 11 hits.
Saturday, the Bruin bats went as cold as the weather. The team
managed only two hits, both singles in the seventh inning, as
Pacific starter Alex Graham pitched a shutout.
Today the Bruins will look to defeat a strong Pepperdine program
that has a new coach in Steve Rodriguez.
UCLA has defeated Pepperdine in its last four meetings, dating
back to 2001.
UCLA junior Wes Whisler will take the mound for his second start
of the season against the Waves (2-3).
Whisler was a regular weekend starter last year, but has been
tabbed to pitch the mid-week games thus far, as he tries to improve
his stamina after a preseason weightlifting injury limited his
pitching conditioning.
He will face a Pepperdine lineup highlighted by sophomores David
Uribes and Brandon Daguio, both first team all-WAC.
