Two UCLA softball players, Lisa Dodd and Krista Colburn, were named second-team All-Americans by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Dodd, a senior, hit 0.369 with a team-leading 14 home runs and 49 runs batted in. Colburn, a junior, hit 0.382 with seven home runs and 32 RBI.
It was the first honor for both players, and UCLA now has 88 All-Americans in softball all-time. The All-Americans were announced prior to the start of the Women’s College World Series, which began on Thursday. UCLA was eliminated at the NCAA Regionals two weeks ago.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: The players on the UCLA women’s volleyball team, playing as a club team called Westwood, won the USAV Adult Open Championships in Austin, Texas. The victory finished the team’s spring training before the regular season starts in the fall.
Westwood finished 5-0 in pool play and beat USA Red in the finals, 25-19. UCLA’s Nellie Spicer was named the MVP and teammates Ali Daley and Kaitlin Sather were also named to the All-Tournament first team. Rachell Johnson and Meghan Schoen were given second-team honors.
MEN’S SOCCER: The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation released its men’s soccer 15th anniversary teams and eight former UCLA players were honored.
UCLA currently plays in the Pac-10 in soccer, but played in the MPSF from 1992-1997.
Carlos Bocanegra (1997-1999), Seth George (1995-1998), Eddie Lewis (1992-1995), Ante Razov (1992-1995), Pete Vagenas (1996-1999) and Sasha Victorine (1996-1999) were named to the first team. Chris Snitko (1992-1995) and Michael Tennyson Jr. (1997-2000) were named to the second team.
Former UCLA coach Sigi Schmid (1980-1998) was named as one of the coaches to the 15th anniversary team.
