Tournament hopefuls aim for four open spots

This weekend the final four spots in the Countrywide Classic were up for grabs.

Thirty players began the qualifying event on Saturday at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

After Sunday there were just eight players remaining, four of whom will reach the tournament.

Today those eight players meet to determine the four remaining spots. All four of the top seeds in the qualifying event reached the final day of competition.

The top seed, Ricardo Mello of Brazil, will face Carsten Ball. Second-seeded George Bastl will meet seventh seed Martin Klizan. Third seed Wesley Whitehouse will go up against Phillip King. And Japan’s Kei Nishikori will try to become the fourth Asian in the draw when he faces James Auckland. All four matches begin at 10 a.m.

Due to a fluke draw, two of the winners today will face each other in the first round of the tournament. Another will play Robert Kendrick, and the final qualifier will meet Wesley Moodie. The tournament starts immediately following the qualifier at 11 a.m.
