Friday just before 11 a.m. a stabbing occurred on the steps of
Kerckhoff Hall, resulting in the victim’s hospitalization for
injuries that are not life-threatening.
Two individuals were in a verbal fight for several minutes,
which led to the suspect pulling a small knife on the victim, said
Nancy Greenstein, director of University Police Community
Services.
Greenstein said that because the stabbing occurred as a result
of an altercation, it is unlikely to occur again unsolicited.
“At this point there is no reason to suspect there is a
danger to students,” Greenstein said.
The victim and the suspect were reportedly spitting at one
another before the victim was stabbed, according to a UCPD
statement.
The victim proceeded to the Ashe Center, and was then
transferred to another medical center for treatment after UCPD had
been notified of the crime, Greenstein said.
A UCPD statement describes the suspect as “male, Asian,
5-foot-6, buzz-cut hair, possibly had a thin mustache, wearing
baggy white T-shirt and jeans.”
The suspect, who is still at large, will face an assault with a
deadly weapon charge upon arrest.
According to the California Penal Code, assault with a deadly
weapon is punishable by up to four years in state prison, up to one
year in county jail, a fine of up to $10,000, or a combination of a
fine and imprisonment.
UCPD will be stepping up its efforts to locate the suspect.
“There will be more directed patrol and officers (on
campus) looking for suspicious individuals,” Greenstein said.
“Hopefully there will be a better description of the suspect,
which will help in locating him.”
Greenstein said a sketch of the suspect should be available next
week.
