UCLA football coach Karl Dorrell has agreed to a contract extension through the 2011 season, athletic director Dan Guerrero announced yesterday.
His previous contract, which he signed in July, was worth $850,000 per year through the 2010 season, plus incentive bonuses of up to $505,000 per year.
“We are looking forward to an exciting and successful season in 2007,” Guerrero told UCLABruins.com. “With Karl solidifying his coaching staff, an experienced team returning, and a terrific home schedule, we are poised to take the next step with our program.”
Since taking the helm in 2003, Dorrell has led the team to a 29-21 record with four bowl appearances and a 1-3 record in those games.
This past season, the squad went 7-6 and lost in the Emerald Bowl to Florida State after winning its final three regular-season games.
The highlight of the year was knocking then-No. 2 USC out of the championship game with a 13-9 victory at the Rose Bowl.
Under Dorrell, the team has posted a 12-1 record at home.
The 2007 team will feature 20 returning starters, with All-American defensive end Justin Hickman and center Robert Chai the only starters leaving.
In 2007, the squad will look to keep improving its defense under the coaching of DeWayne Walker. The defensive unit finished 33rd nationally in total defense and tied for ninth in rushing defense, anchored by a strong front four. Bruce Davis will be the senior leader next season for the defensive line. The All-American finished the year tied with Hickman with 12.5 sacks each, good for fourth in the country.
The offense will look to either Ben Olson or Pat Cowan, who will both be redshirt juniors, to quarterback the team, and to Chris Markey to return as the starting running back.
The recruiting class for next season is rated No. 30 as a group by scout.com, but tied for No. 7 overall in average player ranking. The number of 11 commits is a small class, because the team will be so heavy with upperclassmen.
