Future Bruins Shining In All-Star Games
UCLA football recruits dotted all-star rosters across the nation
as they took the field for the last time at the high school
level.
At Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, future Bruins donned
all-star jerseys for the 51st Shrine California All-Star Classic.
The game, which pits Northern California against Southern
California, featured 10 Bruins playing for the South and five
playing for the North.
Quarterback Matt Moore finished 8 of 12 with one touchdown pass,
and rushed for two more in leading the South to a 43-13 victory.
For the North, Jebiaus Brown scored a touchdown. On one play, North
linebacker Xavier Burgess ran down Moore from behind, tossing his
future teammate to the ground.
In Virginia, linebacker Justin London won defensive MVP honors
as he blocked a field goal attempt and was in on numerous tackles.
On one particular play that sent oohs and aahs through the crowd,
London lifted an opposing running back off the ground and dropped
him on his backside.
“I’ve been working on my speed this summer,”
London told the Roanoke Times. “It was a definite factor in
this game, and I don’t think I’ve gotten any
slower.”
A little closer to home, defensive back Joe Garcia grabbed two
interceptions in the first four minutes of the Orange County
All-Star Game, but his North team still lost, 23-10.
Anderson Tattoos NFL Contract
Former UCLA free safety Marques Anderson inked a three-year,
$1.3 million contract with a $415,000 signing bonus to play for the
Green Bay Packers. After his agent had agreed to the deal, team
officials had to track down Anderson at a tattoo parlor on Tuesday
to get Anderson’s signature.
Anderson, the first of Green Bay’s six draft picks to ink
a deal, was named to the All Pac-10 second team and was second
among all Bruin defenders with 63 stops last year.
London’s Time May Be Sooner Than
Later
London, the incoming 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker from
Virginia, told the Roanoke Times that UCLA coaches have told him to
expect to play next year.
“They told me to get myself prepared to play during the
summer because I’m going to have to come in and play off the
bat,” London told the Roanoke Times.
“I’m going to come in second string. If I
don’t start this year, then I’ll definitely start next
year.”
The comments come on the heels of Audie Attar’s dismissal
from the team a little over a month ago. Attar, who has since
transferred to Idaho State, was the leading candidate for the
weakside linebacker position.
