Two men have been noted as “subjects of interest” by the university police and the Associated Students UCLA security in recently issued crime bulletins.
Students and Westwood residents are encouraged to be on alert and to notify the proper authorities if they see either of these people.
Jorge Angel Velasco is a “known office prowler,” according to the UCPD crime alert.
In March, Velasco was arrested for prowling in Franz Hall.
On April 2, Velasco was seen around the Semel Institute, where an unknown suspect had recently attempted to enter an occupied office.
Brent Kennedy has been caught masturbating in the women’s bathroom on the first floor of Kerckhoff Hall. Maintenance workers have observed Kennedy in the area several times, usually in the late afternoon or evening.
An e-mail from Randy Jenkins of ASUCLA security urges women to be aware of their surroundings when they go to the bathroom, and to consider using a different facility until Kennedy is apprehended.
Nancy Greenstein, director of police community relations for UCPD, said that if anyone is observed engaging in “suspicious behavior,” students should call UCPD immediately.
Kennedy is a white male, 22 years old, with brown hair and blue eyes. He is 6 feet and approximately 200 pounds. He is believed to be homeless. He was last seen wearing gray pants, a black coat and beanie, and carrying a gray and red backpack.
On April 5, UCPD arrested Kennedy for trespassing in Ackerman Union. Afterward, campus police issued an order for him to stay away from the building.
According to the e-mail from Jenkins, they have reason to believe Kennedy may have been a UCLA student at one point.
Greenstein said that he is currently not involved with UCLA.
“He’s not student, staff or faculty,” Greenstein said.
If anyone sees Kennedy, they should contact Jenkins at 310-261-0037. Greenstein said they can also call UCPD at 310-825-1491.
Greenstein said Velasco is primarily a “subject of interest” because he may know details related to recent crimes.
“People think maybe he has information that could be helpful in some of the burglaries and thefts on campus.”
Velasco is described in the crime bulletin as a Hispanic male. He has black hair and brown eyes, is about 27 years old and is approximately 5 feet, 7 inches and 185 pounds.
Because of the recent burglaries and thefts on campus, the UCPD has put out a crime bulletin listing Velasco as a “subject of interest,” and requests that anyone who sees him on campus contact UCPD.
Greenstein said the UCPD’s past interactions with Velasco have been nonviolent.
Kristi Godines, a crime analyst with UCPD, said people who see either man should not try to directly get involved.
“If they see somebody just doing any kind of strange behavior, they should call us and let the professionals take care of it,” Godines said.
