Senior thrower receives automatic qualifier for 2008 Olympic Trials

On Wednesday, redshirt senior Greg Garza extended his track and field season past the collegiate level.

His throw of 211-7 feet in the discus at the Big Throws Classic in Salinas was good enough for him to earn an “A,” or automatic, qualifier for the Olympic Trials.

There are two standards for the trials, the “A” and the “B.” The “B” qualifier does not ensure a spot at the trials but a chance at being invited if there are open spots in the event. By making the “A” standard, Garza guaranteed himself a spot in the trials, which will be held in Eugene, Ore.

“We are thrilled,” coach Art Venegas said. “(Garza) beat several elite athletes and was close to the school record.”

Garza’s throw was a lifetime best and over a two-foot improvement from his previous best of 208-11.

He was in competition with some of the top professional throwers in the U.S. and other top international throwers.

Garza finished third overall, and while he is that much closer to Beijing, he still has a tough road ahead of him.

“Nationals is going to be competitive and tough; we need to have Greg keep his position,” Venegas said.

Even with the trials in the back of his mind, Garza’s main focus is on the rest of the postseason.

“It’s all about nationals,” Garza said. “Go to regionals, qualify for nationals and try to win. Competing well there will set me up for the trials.”

While he will be concentrating on finishing the collegiate season, he feels good about making the qualifier and said he is relieved.

“I can focus on beating those guys instead of chasing the mark,” Garza said.

For Garza this could be the start of a dream he has had since he was in high school.

He said a teacher he had in high school had the class write about their goals; his was to be a part of the 2008 U.S. Olympic team.

“I’ve always wanted to be on the team,” Garza said. “It’s sort of funny that it’s coming around and there is actually a chance to make that goal happen.”
