On Friday, a man firing shots was arrested on the corner of Broxton and Le Conte Avenues. The police later found five semi-automatic pistols and 400 rounds on him as well as timers and paint thinner in his suitcase.
The first officer arrived within one minute of the 911 call around 11:49 p.m.
After the suspect, Gene Bush, refused to get on the ground, he was incapacitated by an officer who fired a Taser. Bush was then handcuffed and detained.
“We don’t know why he picked Westwood,” said Nancy Greenstein, director of police community services for the university police.
“He lives in a van, tends to relate to Westwood. … It has nothing to do with UCLA,” she said.
After an area check, police discovered that Bush had fired shots at a traffic light and a nearby building.
The suspect then indicated to his suitcase which he said contained “the secret.” An inspection of the bag showed timers, cans of paint, a manifesto entitled “The Secret,” and other suspicious items.
Assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department and a bomb squad was then requested.
Another 7,800 rounds were found in Bush’s van and 3,000 in his storage unit.
Upon inspection, the suspect was found to have no criminal history. Bush’s motivations are still unclear, Greenstein said.
Bush is currently being held without bail.
