Ike Williams, a backup guard on the UCLA men’s basketball
team, was detained by police Sunday night after he was allegedly
involved in an altercation outside a Westwood apartment.
Two other members of the basketball team, shooting guard Brian
Morrison and forward Josiah Johnson, were also named in the media
log report, but the Los Angeles Police Department’s
investigation appears to center around Williams, who was released
later that night. No arrests have been made at this time.
Witnesses said multiple police cars arrived at a party at 638
Landfair Avenue on Sunday night. The LAPD had received a call of
disturbing the peace at 11:27 p.m., according to the report.
Minutes later, the LAPD received a second call, this time alleging
that an assault with a deadly weapon had taken place at the same
site.
A spokesman for the LAPD would not release an incident report or
any more details concerning the investigation because no charges
have been filed.
UC police department director of communications Nancy Greenstein
said the LAPD asked the department to assist with detaining the
individuals.
Athletic department spokesman Bill Bennett said UCLA coach Ben
Howland was aware of the situation, but had not determined whether
any disciplinary measures were necessary.
“It is currently under investigation,” Bennett said.
“And because of that, we have no further comment.”
Williams, 20, earned a spot on the team in 2002 as a walk-on
freshman guard. The redshirt sophomore has appeared in just one
game, playing one minute in UCLA’s victory over Cal last
season.
