The UCLA men’s tennis team had a relatively relaxing
weekend, removed from the pressures of dual match play. Several
Bruins competed in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, held in
La Jolla, Calif. UCLA’s No. 1 doubles team of Alberto
Francis and Kris Kwinta, seeded No. 5 in
the tournament, advanced to the Round of 16 before losing to USC
coaches Peter Smith and Kyle
Spencer, 6-4, 6-3. The Bruin team of Chris
Surapol and Philipp Gruendler also
advanced to the Round of 16. They were defeated by Ante
Matijevic and Lester Cook of Texas
A&M, the No. 1 seeded team. UCLA’s team of Jason
Nguyen and Aaron Yovan was defeated in
the Round of 32, 6-2, 6-1, by Notre Dame’s Brent
D’Amico and Ryan Keckley.
Tobias Clemens and Chris Lam had
the weekend off.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: UCLA’s
Trevor Ariza was named to the Pac-10’s All
Freshman Team, conference commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.
Ariza averages 11.5 points per game, third highest on the team. He
is also the Bruins’ second-leading rebounder, with 6.4 per
game.
WOMEN’S HOOPS: Sebnem
Kimyacioglu hit a three-pointer with under four minutes
remaining in the second half to give Stanford its first lead, and
the Cardinal hung on to defeat Arizona 51-46 in the Pac-10
tournament final. Top-seeded Stanford defeated UCLA 70-66 Sunday in
the semifinals. UCLA sophomore Nikki Blue was
named to the All-Tournament team.
