The UCLA women’s rowing team will open its exhibition
season Saturday with the Class Race Exhibition. The team hopes the
intra-squad meet will mark the start of a new annual tradition at
UCLA. The event is also Parent/Alumni Day, and parents and alumni
will be given the opportunity to take out a boat. The Bruins will
have boat christenings following the conclusion of the races. The
first race at the UCLA Boathouse is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. The
Bruins will race four boats on Saturday: a junior eight, a
sophomore/senior eight, and two freshmen eights. The Bruins open up
their regular season on March 20 when they host a regatta against
UC Irvine. The boat christenings will take place at 11 a.m.
MEN’S GOLF: The No. 3 UCLA men’s
golf team will play in the Las Vegas Founders Tournament this
weekend. The tournament, which lasts from today through Sunday,
will be played at the Southern Highlands Golf Club and will be
hosted by UNLV. The field includes all top five teams in the
country, including No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Clemson, No. 4 Georgia Tech
and No. 5 Georgia. The top collegiate golfer in the country, Wake
Forest’s Bill Haas, and the 2003 NCAA
Champion, Arizona State’s Alejandro
Canizares, will also be competing at the Las Vegas
Founders Tournament. The Bruins enter this tournament having won
three events this season and 10 of their last 15 events dating back
to February 2003. “Our team is certainly proud of its recent
success,” UCLA coach O.D. Vincent said in a press release.
“We look to this tournament as a preview to the post-season
and, hopefully, to gauge our prospects for the final stretch drive
of the season.” UCLA has made a change in its lineup this
week, substituting freshman Peter Campbell for
senior Roy Moon. The rest of the lineup will
remain intact with seniors Steve Conway,
John Merrick and Travis Johnson
as well as junior John Poucher.
