Chad Barrett tallied a goal and two assists as
the UCLA men’s soccer team defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy
3-1 at the Home Depot Center on Monday morning. It was the
Bruins’ second victory over the Galaxy in the spring season.
“Today was a good game for us,” UCLA coach
Jorge Salcedo said. “Both teams are at
different stages of their respective seasons. … They’re in
the middle of their season and these exhibition games are an
opportunity for Sigi (Schmid) to see some of the
players that didn’t play in their game on Saturday.”
The Galaxy tied the game, 1-1, early in the second half, but the
Bruins struck right back. Goals from Evan Corey
and Mike Enfield proved to be the difference.

WOMEN’S POLO: UCLA women’s water
polo’s Emily Feher was named MPSF Player of
the Week for her stellar goalkeeping against three top-20
opponents. The freshman led UCLA to wins over No. 7 Loyola
Marymount, No. 16 UC Irvine and No. 4 Long Beach State. Against the
Lions she saved the potential game-tying shot in the game’s
final possession, preserving the 4-3 win. For the year, Feher has
130 saves with a 4.85 goals against average. This is the third MPSF
Player of the Week award for the Bruins this season.
Kristina Kunkel and Lauren
Heineck
won back-to-back weeks in early March.

FOOTBALL: On Monday, the Pac-10 penalized
Washington football for gambling violations and improper recruiting
during former football coach Rick
Neuheisel’s
tenure. Neuheisel is believed to have
gambled on the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, which the
Pac-10 prohibits. The conference also determined other staff
members participated in small-stakes gambling pools and fantasy
leagues. Washington was placed on probation for one year, and it
must review all of its athletics programs. Washington still may
receive NCAA sanctions as it has a June 11 hearing before the NCAA
infractions committee. Neuheisel himself was fired after admitting
to off-campus pools with neighbors. While investigating the
gambling allegations, the university uncovered recruiting
violations. As a result, the school self-imposed a reduction of
football recruiting visits by eight for the next year.
