Bruin plays for Mexican national team; 8 to be inducted
into hall of fame
UCLA sophomore Iris
Mora
played for Mexico in a 3-0 loss to the United States
in a women’s soccer friendly Sunday at University Stadium in
Albuquerque, N.M. Mora, a forward, started and played 72 minutes
before coming off for a substitute. She led the Bruins with 13
goals and 14 assists last season, and was also named to the
All-America team. The Mexican national team, which recently
qualified for its first Olympics, dropped to 0-13 all-time against
the Americans ““ but according to U.S. forward Mia
Hamm
, Mexico’s level of play continues to improve.
“There’s a buzz right now in Mexico about this team,
and you can see that in the eyes and the faces of those
players,” Hamm told the Associated Press. “It doesn’t
matter who they play, they feel they have a chance.” The
United States got second-half goals from Cindy
Parlow
, Hamm, and Lori Chalupny.

HALL OF FAME: Eight new members will be
inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 8. The new
inductees for the 2004 class are current USC basketball coach
Henry Bibby, Los Angeles Galaxy soccer coach
Sigi Schmid, Dennis Dummit
(football), Carlton Gray (football), Steve
Lewis
(track and field), James Owens
(football/track and field), Fred Slaughter
(basketball), and Natalie Williams (basketball).
The UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame, which was dedicated in 1984 with
25 charter members, will now have 191 distinguished Bruins.

MEN’S WATER POLO: UCLA junior
Brett Ormsby was nominated for the Peter J. Cutino
Award, given to the outstanding male collegiate water polo player
in the United States. Tony Azvedo of Stanford and
Attila Banhidy of California were also nominated
for the award, which will be given May 22 at the Olympic
Clubs’ City Club facility in San Francisco. Ormsby scored 70
goals for the Bruins last season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Former UCLA star
Michelle Greco shook off the effects of a hip
injury to score four points in her Seattle Storm debut. Greco, who
played 13 minutes in the Storm’s 83-44 exhibition loss to the
Phoenix Mercury, went 2-for-6 from the field and pulled down three
offensive rebounds. Greco, who was cut last year by the Cleveland
Rockers, is trying to latch on in Seattle. The Storm must finalize
its regular season roster by May 19.

BASEBALL: De La Salle catcher Parker
Hanks
has signed a letter of intent to play baseball at
UCLA, the San Francisco Chronicle reported last week. Hanks, who is
also a star linebacker at De La Salle, is rated as one of the top
baseball prospects in California. He has also been offered a chance
to walk on at UCLA in football.
