UCLA’s Kate Anderson won the U.S.
Intercollegiate Archery Championships in the women’s recurve
bow held on Sunday at James Madison University in Harrisburg, Va.
Anderson barely beat out Corinne Yohann of Texas
A&M, 99-96, in the final. In the men’s team
championships, UCLA took home 8th out of 21 schools, behind the
champion Aggies.

MEN’S TRACK: Thrower Dan
Ames
was selected as one of the two United States Track
Coaches Association Athletes of the Week for Division I on Monday.
Hyleas Fountain of Georgia was the other honoree.
The UCLA senior captain was named on the strength of being the
first thrower in the history of the Pac-10 Championships to win
three individual titles ““ the shot put, hammer throw and
discus throw. All three throws qualified him for the NCAA West
Regional, to be held May 28-29 at Cal State Northridge.

WOMEN’S TRACK: UCLA legends
Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Florence Griffith
Joyner
were elected to the first U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
class since 1992. Joyner-Kersee captured gold in the heptathlons in
1988 and 1992. The four-time Olympian won six Olympic medals in her
career and still owns the world record in the heptathlon, which she
set in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. Griffith Joyner, who passed away
in 1998, took home five Olympic medals over her career, including
three golds in 1988 ““ in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. She
still holds world records in the 100m (10.49) and 200m (21.34).

CARRYING THE TORCH: Bruin legends and Olympic
gold medalists Joyner-Kersee, Gail Devers and
Rafer Johnson will all carry the Olympic torch
during the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch Relay from June 16 to 19. The
flame will visit Los Angeles, the host of the 1932 and 1984 Games,
on June 16.

BASEBALL: Bruin alumnus and 2002 World Series
MVP Troy Glaus will undergo surgery on his right
throwing shoulder Friday and is expected to miss the next two
months and possibly the rest of the season.
