Breaking News: Sepulveda Pass fire contained

A wildfire started in the Sepulveda Pass near campus at 12:51 a.m. Thursday morning not far from the UCLA campus though officials said there was no immediate danger to the UCLA community.

The fire is now extinguished, as of 8:20 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Fire Department Web site.

The fire was on the western side of the San Diego 405 Freeway on the western side near Getty Center Driver, two miles from the Getty Center, according to the LAFD site.

UCLA Bruin Alert text messaged all students of the fire this morning at 5:34 a.m. through Bruin Alert emergency messaging system.

All lanes on the 405 Freeway were closed, according to news reports and Bruin Alert.

The next text message came at 7:01 a.m., updating students that the San Diego 405 freeway had been reopened in both directions.

“There was a decision made that due to the relative proximity of campus, the erratic wind conditions and the urban interface between the areas that were burning…it was decided the most prudent thing would be to notify the community of the fire and encourage people to monitor news reports,” said Phil Hampton, a UCLA spokesman.

Hampton said the most important thing for students was to remain alert of the risk.

While the fire was still blazing, firefighters recommended that Los Angeles residences with health concerns take advantage of evacuation shelters at either the Stephen S. Wise Temple on 15500 Stephen S. Wise Dr. or the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Westwood at 11301 Wilshire Blvd.

One hundred acres of grass and brush were burned by the fire, according to the LAFD site.

There were no injuries or other great damage, and the exact cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the report.
