Several men’s tennis players win opening-round
matches Men’s basketball senior forward Dijon
Thompson sustained a cut in the webbing on his right hand during a
scrimmage on Wednesday, but will not miss time due to the injury.
The 6-foot-7 Thompson, a three-year starter for UCLA, needed four
stitches to close the wound. Although the injury may hinder
Thompson’s shooting ability, coach Ben Howland does not think
it is anything serious. “With our first game still two weeks
away, this should not be a setback for Dijon or our team,”
Howland said. UCLA opens the exhibition season against Simon Fraser
at Pauley Pavilion on Nov. 5. The regular season gets underway on
Nov. 20 when the Bruins host Chicago State.
TENNIS: Several members of the UCLA men’s
tennis team had a strong showing in their opening round matches
Thursday at the Wilson/ITA Fall Regional Championships held at
Pepperdine in Malibu. Among the Bruins who won their first round
matches included Chris Lam, Alberto Francis, Benjamin Kohlloeffel,
and freshmen Mathieu Dehaine and Jeremy Drean. Kris Kwinta was the
only Bruin to fall on Thursday, who dropped a 6-2, 6-0
decision.
