Armed robbery hits near campus

University police received reports of four robbery incidents on Monday night in the North Village.

Two robbery and two attempted robbery dispatches were received by UCPD within an hour of each other, beginning at 5:55 p.m., according to a UCPD statement.

University officials said the robberies follow a trend at college campuses across the country.

“One of the things just in communicating with campuses across the country, is it seems like often younger criminals are targeting campus communities, because individuals there have cell phones and iPods and cash,” said Nancy Greenstein, a UCPD spokeswoman, in a statement.

“So they find it easier to victimize (students). And so we’re seeing that trend nationally,” she said.

The first incident occurred at the intersection of Levering Avenue and Midvale Avenue,

The second occurred at the 700 block of Levering Avenue just after 6 p.m.

A third occurred at 6:15 p.m. on Strathmore Avenue and the fourth incident, an attempted robbery, occurred at 6:35 p.m. on Strathmore Avenue, according to the statement.

Two suspects worked together in each of the four incidents, according to statement.

At the time of the incidents, the first suspect engaged the victim in conversation and the other suspect acted as a lookout, according to the statement. The suspects had a gun.

The robberies follow two incidents that occurred last week in Westwood. These incidents were also robberies.

There was a robbery and an attempted robbery on Oct. 1, during which neither victim was injured.

All of the incidents are currently under investigation, Greenstein said in a statement.

Students should continue to be alert, and should contact UCPD in the event of suspicious activity.

“We’re reminding people that they are our greatest assets, and we really encourage people to let us know,” she said.
