Parents join to renew “under God”
fight
SAN FRANCISCO “”mdash; Michael Newdow is again suing to remove
the words “under God” from the Pledge of
Allegiance.
Newdow, a Sacramento atheist, won his case more than two years
ago before a federal appeals court, which said it was an
unconstitutional blending of church and state for public school
students to pledge to God.
In June, however, the U.S. Supreme Court tossed the case, saying
Newdow could not lawfully sue because he did not have custody of
his elementary school-aged daughter, on whose behalf he sued, and
because the girl’s mother objected to the suit.
In the latest challenge filed in Sacramento federal court on
Monday, eight co-plaintiffs have joined the suit, and all are
custodial parents or the children themselves, Newdow said.
Redlands contemplates cross in city logo
REDLANDS “”mdash; Voters will decide the fate of the city’s
logo, which has come under fire by the American Civil Liberties
Union because it contains a cross.
After more than two hours of public comment Tuesday night, the
City Council decided not to act on an alternate logo design that
still included a cross.
“If that’s what the people of the city of Redlands
want is to put the cross back on and allow the ACLU to sue us and
we have to defend ourselves and pay out an extraordinary amount of
money, then so be it,” Mayor Susan Peppler said.
