The election results for the Graduate Students Association, scheduled for release last night, will remain sealed until today at noon as a result of a formal complaint made to the GSA Elections Board.
According to the board’s code, the results must remain sealed until the board addresses and resolves the complaint.
The board moved to a closed session to discuss the complaint after discourse of the distribution of voter incentives at last night’s meeting.
Cynthia Pineda Scott, director of elections, said the complaint was filed and that it was already adjudicated
by the election board during last night’s meeting, but the final results will remain sealed until this afternoon.
No further information concerning the complaint could be released, Scott said.
“I was only made aware that a complaint was filed today so this has come as a bit of a surprise to me considering it’s an election with four unopposed positions. I’m very confident that Cynthia will do the right job in terms of bringing this complaint to whatever appropriate resolution that it needs to be brought to,” said incumbent presidential candidate Jamal Madni.
Madni added that for him, the delay of the results has not put a damper on the spirit of elections.
He said he is anticipating the release of the results.
“It’s unfortunate that a complaint needed to be filed because it seemed that the election was done completely by the book,” he said.
“I look forward to the results and I hope everything will be resolved as it needs to.”
The members of the GSA Forum, the governing body of the association, will probably not be aware of the situation until the release of the results by the election board, said Ryan Roberts, incumbent candidate for internal vice president.
“We want a transparent election process, and we just want to see the entire process through and make sure it’s as transparent as possible,” Roberts said.
Scott said the results will be posted on the GSA Web site today.
