A major water main broke near the UCLA campus about 1:00 p.m.
Wednesday, leaving thousands on campus and across the Westside
without water.
Jack Powazek, assistant vice chancellor for general services,
said the problem had been repaired by the Los Angeles Department of
Water and Power and that the campus water pressure was being
restored.
A press release from the LA DWP said a large area in West Los
Angeles was affected, including all of Westwood and the UCLA
campus. The affected area encompasses the City of Beverly Hills on
the East, Sepulveda Boulevard on the West, Somma Way on the North,
and Santa Monica Boulevard on the South.
Residents in the affected area are being advised by the
university and the city to boil all water before using it until
Friday evening.
“Failure to follow this advisory could result in stomach
or intestinal illness,” the advisory read.
All dining halls on campus have been closed and many Hill
residents have been traveling to Westwood eateries for dinner.
The Office of Residential Life will be providing a limited
supply of bottled water to residents and portable toilets will
placed in De Neve Plaza and in front of Covel Commons. All
residential dining halls and restaurants will be closed until
further notice.
