Henry Rollins
Saturday, Mojave Tent
When Henry Rollins took the stage Saturday afternoon, he didn’t treat
the crowd to any Black Flag or Rollins Band favorites. Instead, he
spoke. He’s humble ““ self-described as a “mere high school graduate” ““
but he’s smart, and he’s got a soapbox. During his short set, Rollins
flirted with a handful of pretty grim topics: war, Cambodian killing
fields, xenophobia and homophobia, but he managed to somehow make the
speech funny and engaging. The crowd loved it; he couldn’t have picked
a more receptive audience. But this wasn’t one of your
run-of-the-mill, preaching-to-the-choir-on-the-streets-of-Berkeley
types of sermons. Rollins had a point: If the audience had the time
and money to come to Coachella, they can scrape together the means to
take action to solve these very real problems.
