No need to wash his mouth out with soap
I would like to correct a statement made in Chris
Umpierre’s article (“Watson finishes UCLA career with
intensity, class,” March 23, Daily Bruin Online Edition)
regarding the Jason Williams-Earl Watson scuffle. While clearly a
product of the intensity of the game, Jason Williams did not start
“yelling obscenities” at Earl Watson. His exact words
in response to Watson’s shove were, and it was apparent even
on television, “What’s up, punk?”
Granted, in the Elizabethan period “punk” was slang
for prostitute, but I seriously doubt that Jason had the 17th
century in mind in the heat of the moment. That having been said,
congratulations to the entire UCLA basketball team on a fine
season. Thursday’s game was admittedly ugly, but as a native
to Southern California, I appreciate the grit and heart that has
characterized UCLA for most of the season. It was obvious at the
end of the game that both Williams and Battier appreciated it as
well. Best wishes to Earl and the other seniors on the team and
best of luck next year.
