Law professors from UCLA and UC Berkeley joined forces recently to create a blog focused on the environment and related policies.
Covering environmental issues from the local to global, the contributors to the “Legal Planet: The Environmental Law and Policy Blog” aim to reach policy makers and readers unfamiliar with environmental law.
There are 12 contributors to the blog, all of whom are law professors at UCLA or Berkeley.
UCLA law professor Sean Hecht said he got involved in the environmental blog when he was approached by Ann Carlson, a law professor at UCLA and the founder of “Legal Planet.”
“The blog is a great way to get information out about environmental law issues. It’s a good medium to communicate law, policy and analysis of new environmental issues,” Hecht said.
The contributors and creators of “Legal Planet” say they feel its genesis is especially timely given the importance of the environment on all levels of government, according to UCLA Today.
Hecht added, “The whole point is to be accessible; some points covered in the blog are more technical, but the point is to appeal to a broad audience. Some posts assume technical knowledge, though most aimed at the ordinary reader.”
Though anyone can comment on posts, students at UC Berkley have taken a more official role and may write their own posts. There may be some potential for students at UCLA to partake as contributors in the future.
“Legal Planet” is still growing in its content and readership.
Having never blogged before, Hecht said he enjoys the practice of blogging, though he sometimes feels challenged to come up with content. He said he hopes to make regular weekly posts.
