Schools beef up security
Nine school district campuses in areas with high crime rates are
getting additional armed guards as part of a ramped-up Safe Schools
Plan coordinating the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los
Angeles Unified School District.
“These schools are in areas that have very, very high
crime rates, and we want to make sure the kids are safe in these
areas,” Mayor James K. Hahn said during a news conference
Monday at Markham Middle School in Watts, one of the affected
campuses.
The mayor, district superintendent Roy Romer and police promised
increased security in and around schools after 15-year-old Deliesh
Allen was shot to death March 17 outside Locke High School in South
Los Angeles. Locke is getting more police.
Busy freeway awaiting upgrade
One of the nation’s worst freeway interchanges ““
Highways 101 and 405 in the San Fernando Valley ““ will get a
$43 million makeover to relieve congestion and improve safety.
More than a half-million motorists travel the interchange each
day.
The California Department of Transportation said the project
will create a smooth transition for motorists entering the
northbound San Diego Freeway at Greenleaf Street in Sherman Oaks.
The new project will create an underpass so motorists entering at
Greenleaf will enter on the northbound 405, while avoiding traffic
exiting to the 101.
