Military jet company wins new contract

EL SEGUNDO “”mdash; Defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp.
said Thursday it won a $3.2 billion multi-year contract to continue
work as a subcontractor to Boeing Co., helping to produce the
Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft.

This is Northrop’s second production contract for the
super Hornet program, in which it supplies Boeing with fuselages
and twin vertical tails to build the carrier-based fighter jet.
Northrop said $650 million of the new contract is funded for fiscal
2005.

The F/A-18 program accounts for more than 1,400 jobs at Northrop
Grumman in El Segundo.

Chase ends in death on live television

LONG BEACH “”mdash; A suspected car thief was shot to death on
live television as he fled with a gun in his hand after a wild
freeway chase.

The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was shot
at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday after he jumped out of the car and
seemed to be heading toward businesses in a shopping center, police
said.

Several channels that had been following the pursuit aired the
shooting, either live or in clips broadcast later.

Officers opened fire as the man leaped out of the car with a gun
in his hand, Officer Greg Schirmer said. He was hit several times
and dropped the gun but was reaching for a second weapon when he
collapsed.
