The University of California plans to decide by January whether to modify or suspend its UC Center Sacramento intern program, said Peter King, director of media relations for the UC Office of the President.
The university hopes to save $850,000 through cutbacks to the program, King said.
He added that the interns currently in the state capital will keep their internships.
The UC Center Sacramento was founded in 2003 as a pilot program and gained permanent status in April 2008, according to a university press release.
The UC is considering running the program out of one of its main campuses, instead of housing it in Sacramento, King said.
“The mission is not being modified, but the means of how we get there are,” he added.
In this environment, the UC is looking at all its programs with fresh eyes to see how the university can preserve them but do so at a lower cost, King said.
“It’s in everybody’s mind to keep the program running,” he said.
