Letters to the Sports Desk

Confessions from a loyal Bruin Last Saturday,
my wife (an ex-Badger cheerleader) and I appreciated the
opportunity to watch the Badgers block a Gopher punt to win the
game on the last play, and. … You know about the Trojans and the
Bruins. I was rooting for the Gophers on that one, but I am, first,
a Bruin, then a Trojan. For me, this has been a dream season…. So
far. It took UCLA rejecting my medical school application to get me
to think anything positive about USC, which took me in and taught
me humility and humanity. Our rivalry is a wonderful phenomenon,
enhancing the enjoyment (and misery) of the respective partisans.
The Bruins have been a hungry team that seems to awaken in the
fourth quarter and play with a rage that is somehow absent at the
beginning. Until December 3, I hope to thoroughly enjoy my alma
maters, and may the deserving team win … I didn’t say the
best. Go Bruins! Laurence Lewin UCLA alumnus

Happy birthday to John Wooden Dear Mr. Wooden:
I came to UCLA 53 years ago as an instructor at the brand new UCLA
School of Medicine. Professionally and academically, it has been a
wonderful experience for my wife and me. However, I want you to
know that your presence here has enriched that experience
enormously. Just as you became a role model for your players, so
also did you become a philosophical role model for the faculty and
students more generally. So, many good wishes on your 95th birthday
and please know that I and many others are proud to have shared our
time at UCLA with you. We will be pleased forever at our good
fortune to have been here in “the Wooden years.”
Dave Solomon Professor Emeritus of Medicine
