The UCLA women’s golf team increased its commanding lead
to 25 strokes after the second round of the Northrop-Grumman
Regional Challenge on Tuesday.
The closest competition for the Bruins (11-over par, 579 total)
at the Palos Verdes Country Club is New Mexico, at 36-over par, 604
with only one round today remaining to be played.
UCLA junior Charlotte Mayorkas is blowing away the individual
field, scoring a 69 in the second round and taking a 7-stroke lead
over second place Julie Tvede of Tulsa.
Mayorkas’ 69 was the low round Tuesday, two strokes better
than everyone else in the field.
The 69 came after a stellar first round on Monday, in which
Mayorkas’ 66 tied her own school record and was four strokes
better than all others in the field shot on Monday.
In 36 holes, Mayorkas has hit only one bogey.
Several Bruins are among the leaders after two rounds at the
Northrop-Grumman Regional Challenge.
Sophomore Susie Mathews is in third place overall among the 80
players in the tournament. Mathews shot an even-par 71, and put up
the second best total of the day along with Tvede.
Mathews’ 144 is nine shots behind Mayorkas’ 135 and
two behind Tvede’s 142.
Mathews shot five birdies and five bogeys on Tuesday.
Senior Krystal Shearer is 13th overall at 8-over par (150
total). Shearer shot a 5-over par 76 on Tuesday.
Senior Gina Umeck is tied for 16th overall with a 9-over par
(151 total). On Tuesday, Umeck shot a 2-over par 73.
The other Bruin in the lineup is freshman Hannah Jun, who is
tied for 42nd with a 15-over par 157. Jun shot a 6-over par 77
Tuesday.
UCLA redshirt senior Bridget Dwyer is competing as an individual
at the tournament. She is tied for 22nd with a 10-over par 152.
Dwyer shot a 2-over par 73 Tuesday.
The Bruins are ranked No. 2 in the nation and are ahead of
several ranked teams in the tournament field, including No. 3
Arizona, No. 6 New Mexico, No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Florida, No.
11 Ohio State, No. 17 Tulsa and No. 21 Pepperdine.
The third and final round will tee off today at 9:09 a.m. The
course is 5,912 yards long and a par-71.
