USAC Recap

The Undergraduate Students Association Council is the official student government of UCLA’s undergraduate students. Council meetings are Tuesdays at 7 p.m. in Kerckhoff 417 and are open to all students

Agenda

“¢bull; Finance Committee Chair Brian L. Tan’s contingency allocations were passed with a unanimous vote of 12-0-0.

“¢bull; The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act was passed with a unanimous vote of 12-0-0.

Special Presentations

“¢bull; Students presented a resolution that will recognize official UCLA support of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act, an initiative that will allow not-for-profit student housing, such as fraternity and sorority houses, to be funded by charitable donations. The act will provide equitable tax distribution and equal access of funding, resulting in safer, better developed housing for all students and hopefully additional donations from the public.

“¢bull; ASUCLA discussed the ongoing development and renovation projects around campus, such as the coffee shop in the Broad arts building and the South Campus Student Center. The group plans to launch a Global Viewpoint Lounge on campus, which will allow students to have access to media and news from around the world. Having saved a profit of $60 million from the last three years, ASUCLA is financially secure and expects to generate around $45 million this year.

“¢bull; CALPIRG proposed a resolution that will increase the organization’s pledge fee from $5 to $10 a quarter. Because the organization is working on an increasing number of projects related to issues such as global warming and making education affordable, more funds are necessary to sustain its activities and increase its influence on both students and policymakers. The resolution must be passed through both USAC and the Office of the Chancellor.

“¢bull; USAC alumni Chris Lamson and David Neuman spoke about their experiences as members of student government in the ’70s and ’80s.

Officer Reports

“¢bull; The office of President Cinthia Flores met with the other student government presidents of the UC system to determine the UC student regent positions, which will be filled through a day-long voting process at UC Berkeley.

“¢bull; Flores will also be working with the Center for Student Programming to develop and implement the Blue and Gold Service Award, which will recognize students who have done large amounts of community service during their time at UCLA.

“¢bull; The office of Internal Vice President Shahida Bawa will launch a week of BruinIntent activities in the upcoming week. Designed to raise awareness of student homelessness and celebrate those who have overcome such hardships, the week’s events will include student performances, student sharings and a sleepover in the Sunset Recreation Center.

“¢bull; External Vice President Susan Li is distributing voter registration forms on the Hill to increase student political participation.

“¢bull; Academic Affairs Commissioner Layhannara Tep met with the United States Student Association Board of Directors to discuss the implementation of differential fees based on majors and campuses and the sharing of money from out-of-state student fees. The executive board voted against the differential fees; however, the sharing of out-of-state funds remains in discussion and faces mixed feelings.

“¢bull; General Representative Jason Tengco is hosting WorldFest, a week-long event of ethnic diversity events, this week. Students will be visiting local ethnic regions and towns on April 17, from Koreatown to Filipinotown.
