Spring Sing is – understandably – one of UCLA’s greatest traditions. It showcases many of the things that Los Angeles is known and loved for: up and coming musicians, the spectacle of a Hollywood production and, of course, celebrity judges. We Bruins love reminding anyone who will sit still long enough that Spring Sing has launched the careers of Sara Bareilles and members of Maroon 5.
Here’s a look at what the past 10 Grand Sweepstakes winners are up to now:
Laura Savage (2016)
Savage graduated after winter quarter this year with a degree in sociology. She’ll be performing in this year’s Spring Sing as part of the three-member band Helen.
Fine Print (2015)
In true jazz style, different iterations of members of this group still play shows together from time to time.
Alex Liu and Eric Jung (2014)
Jung currently studies medicine at USC’s Keck School of Medicine. Liu continues to make music by covering various popular songs by artists like Halsey and Justin Timberlake and sharing them on social media.
Bruin Harmony (2013)
Bruin Harmony is still an active a cappella group on campus. They’ve put out a couple albums, compete regularly in different festivals and competitions and perform at various UCLA events.
Alto (2012)
Jessica Jones, Veronica Rogers, Nicolette Yarbrough, Joseph Lorge, Chris Haupt and Dave Wilson put out an EP shortly after their 2012 victory. Various members are part of new groups – for example, Yarbrough and Lorge front Fenway.
Courtney Randall (2011)
Since winning in 2011, Randall has released an EP and single on iTunes. She also has a popular Youtube channel.
DJ Harper (2010)
Harper has rebranded himself since his 2010 win – his old “DJ Harper” website hasn’t been updated since 2014, and he goes by James now – but according to a Facebook post and accompanying Soundcloud profile, he has new music in the works.
Katie Boeck (2007, 2008, 2009)
Boeck has been busy since winning Spring Sing three times. She’s been on tour throughout India, put out an EP, had music featured on HBO’s “The Newsroom” and had a role on Broadway. She currently is an actress and tours with her music.
Mikey G and Dan from Danville (2006)
After winning Spring Sing in 2006, Mikey G and Dan from Danville added a member to their duo and became Lady Danville. They put out four EPs and toured with Ben Folds and Dashboard Confessional before breaking up in 2012. Michael Garner and Dan Chang – the original and titular members – have since started a new band called Hunter Hunted.
