Sproul Hall will have a new, centralized laundry room after construction finishes in June.

The laundry room will open in fall quarter and operate 24 hours a day. Students will be able to pay with their BruinCards instead of coins, said UCLA spokesperson Rebecca Kendall.

Kendall added that the new facility, which will have 19 dryers and 17 washers, will be on the ground floor where the building’s mail room and campus information technology department were previously located.

The laundry room will also be equipped with a system to alert people of completed loads, which was not previously available at Sproul Hall, Kendall said.

Denisse Rea, a second-year psychology student, said all the laundry machines on her floor would often be in use when she tried to use the smaller laundry rooms on each floor of Sproul Hall.

“With the new laundry room, more people can have access to the washing and drying machines,” Rea said. “Considering the amount of students in Sproul, having two washers and two dryers on each floor is a little lacking.”

Lorena Ambriz, a second-year biology student, said before the renovation, the laundry rooms in Sproul Hall had such poor ventilation that the fire alarm was often set off.

Vivian Wang, a first-year computational and systems biology student, also said she thinks there were ventilation problems and added she thinks the BruinCard payments would be more convenient than using quarters.

The renovation is part of an ongoing project to centralize and improve all high-rise laundry facilities on the Hill. The construction in Sproul Hall follows a laundry room consolidation in Hedrick Hall, and a similar project will begin at Rieber Hall in June, Kendall said.
