Two goals from senior forward Lauren Cheney helped the UCLA women’s soccer team defeat the Washington Huskies 2-1 Friday in Seattle.
Notching her 13th goal of the season in the 25th minute of the match, Cheney fired a shot from 10 yards into the lower-left corner off an assist from junior defender Lauren Barnes. With her 27th career game-winning goal, Cheney passes Traci Arkenberg and Danesha Adams on the school record for game-winning goals. Arkenberg and Adams were tied at 26 during their stints in Westwood.
Cheney’s first goal in the sixth minute put the third-ranked Bruins (16-2-1, Pac-10 7-1-0) on the scoreboard when she shot from 10 yards into the lower-left corner off a deflection.
The Huskies (11-5-3, 3-3-2) equalized the score when Washington midfielder Kate Deines penetrated the UCLA defense and fed the ball to teammate forward Veronica Perez, who scored from close range when Bruin goalkeeper Chante’ Sandiford came out to secure the ball.
Washington outshot UCLA 10-9 on the match. Sandiford and Husky goalkeeper Kari Davidson both registered four saves.
The Bruins finish their Pac-10 season on Sunday, when they visit Washington State in Pullman, Wash. With the win tonight, the Bruins continue their hopes of having a share at the conference title. The results of the UCLA-Washington State match and the Stanford-California game will determine the fate of the Pac-10 championship.
