Police say woman sexually assaulted near Gayley and Veteran avenues

A woman was sexually assaulted near the intersection of Gayley and Veteran avenues around 1 a.m. Friday, police said.

The suspect has not been arrested, and police have no leads on his identity, said Los Angeles Police Department detective Tim Shumaker.

According to police reports, the suspect approached the victim after she parked and exited her vehicle. He allegedly forced her to a dimly lit, grassy area nearby and sexually assaulted her.

The victim was not injured, Shumaker said, although he would not comment on her mental condition. Police declined to state whether the victim is a UCLA student.

The suspect did not use a weapon in the assault. He is considered to be very dangerous and is described by police as being about 5 feet 7 inches tall, black and in his 20s.

In the meantime, students should travel in groups, be vigilant and avoid walking around at night, if possible, Shumaker said.

LAPD released information about the assault today, although it occurred on Friday. Shumaker attributed this gap in time to the victim being initially hesitant to talk to police.
