UCLA officials appointed a law professor Monday as the first associate vice chancellor of BruinX.
Devon Carbado will lead the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion’s BruinX team, according to an announcement from Vice Chancellor of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Jerry Kang.
BruinX is a group of staff members who seek to analyze existing research about discrimination and equality to implement policies and intervention projects on campus.
Carbado will manage and supervise the staff in planning projects and guiding policy creation, Kang added in his announcement. He will also advise the staff in the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion as a senior member.
Carbado served as vice dean for faculty and research at the law school for two terms, most recently from 2009 to 2010, according to the BruinX website. He won the law school’s professor of the year award in 2000 and 2006, as well as the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award in 2003.
Carbado also writes articles about race, law and criminal procedure, according to the website. He is an alumnus of Harvard Law School and served as editor in chief of the Harvard Law School’s Harvard Black Letter Law Journal.
