Pac-10 cancels Stanford meet

It was announced Wednesday that the gymnastics meet set to take place in Palo Alto between No. 2 UCLA and No. 6 Stanford on Feb. 8 had been cancelled by the Pac-10 Conference.

According to the conference, the Bruins were exposed to an illness the previous weekend, and many of the team members were sick.

It was thought best to cancel the meet for the benefit of those already sick and to maintain the health of those they might come into contact with.

“Well Stanford is definitely one of our big rivals,” assistant coach Chris Waller said Tuesday.

“I think it is nine athletes on our team got some virus, so they’ve been pretty sick and (Monday) the (Center for Disease Control) cancelled our workout.”

UCLA practices were cancelled through the time of the announcement on Wednesday.

The meet will not be rescheduled but the cancellation should not affect the Bruins’ Regional Qualifying Score either.

UCLA has already tallied three away meets at this point in the season, which could potentially be used for their RQS.

While missing a meet against a highly ranked Pac-10 opponent is never desirable, the team hopes that a week off will give the members time to return to full competition mode at home on Feb. 15 against Washington, Boise State, and Cal State Fullerton.
