Westwood BID recap – May 19

The Westwood Village Improvement Association is a nonprofit organization tasked with improving the state of Westwood Village. Property and business owners created the association in 2011 to provide Westwood Village with functions the City of Los Angeles could not provide. Its board of directors meets monthly.

  • Michael Beck, UCLA administrative vice chancellor, attended his first meeting on the UCLA representative seat on the board of directors.
  • Andrew Thomas, executive director of the association, said a UCLA urban planning class met with the association and public last week to propose changes to the Westwood Village Specific Plan. The class will present again June 2 at 3 p.m. at 10880 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 105.
  • Thomas added the association’s Business Attraction and Retention Committee is working on a new walking map of the district and is discussing possible events the association may host in the Village.
  • Board chair Jessica Dabney said throughout the following weeks, board members will be reaching out to different Westwood stakeholders, property owners and business owners to improve communication between the board and the community.
  • Dave Karwaski, senior associate director for UCLA Transportation, gave a presentation about UCLA’s bike share program launching in the fall. UCLA plans to have 115 bicycles at about 18 hubs throughout campus, the Hill and Westwood. One hub would be located by the UCLA Wilshire Center, one by Parking Lot 36 on Kinross Avenue and another on Le Conte and Tiverton avenues.
  • The board voted to pay up to $44,000 for two UCLA bike share hubs in Westwood Village. One hub would be on Broxton Avenue and the second hub’s location will be determined at the association’s Parking, Access and Transportation committee on June 1. The association would only pay to install the hubs and UCLA would pay for maintenance and operational costs. Thomas said the cost would not affect any of the associations current programs.
