With a rare break in the speedy indoor schedule, several UCLA
track and field athletes will cross town to compete in the historic
L.A. Invitational Indoor Track Meet at the Los Angeles Sports
Center.
While there will be Bruin athletes participating, all will be
acting unattached. With the absence of the UCLA name, all times and
scores will not count towards the team recordings and will only be
used towards individual records.
Among those entered into the meet, the women athletes will
include one of the nation’s top collegiate half-milers,
senior Tiffany Burgess and freshman Chelsea Johnson, the No. 1 prep
high school pole vaulter last year. They will be up against former
UCLA great Tracy O’Hara and Mel Mueller, the No. 3 all-time
U.S. vaulter. Other women competing will include freshman Candice
Baucham and junior Sheena Johnson in both the long and triple
jumps, while junior Sani Roseby and freshman Dawn Harper will
represent the sprinters.
From the men’s team, freshman Chauncee Smith, senior Joe
Hunter and freshman Jacques Lazarus will compete in the 55-meter
dash; sophomore Rodney Diggs, sophomore Robert Hambleton, freshman
Matt Willis, freshman Chris Dunbar and freshman Claude Distin will
run the 500 yards. Pole vaulters sophomore Yoo Kim, senior Jared
Drake and junior Pat Luke will vault against former Bruin standout
Scott Slover, an NCAA pole vault medalist.
The team will not compete in Arkansas this weekend as originally
scheduled.
