In its first true road match of the year, the women’s tennis team returned home with just its fourth loss of the season.
After Friday’s match against No. 1 Cal was postponed due to rain, No. 25 UCLA (9-4, 2-1 Pac-12) suffered a 5-1 defeat on Saturday at No. 23 Stanford (7-3, 2-1 Pac-12).
Only the singles portion of the match was played because rain was expected in the afternoon. But that was all the Cardinal needed to secure the victory and extend their current 14-game home-win streak, which dates back to last season.
The Bruins have struggled getting ahead in singles matches against higher-ranked opponents this season. In its prior two matches against top-25 nationally ranked teams, UCLA won just two of 12 first sets. The trend continued against the Cardinal, as freshman Alaina Miller was the only Bruin to claim the first set in her singles match.
Senior Catherine Harrison collected UCLA’s lone point. The No. 19 nationally ranked singles player added to her impressive 10-2 singles record this year with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over Taylor Davidson, who is ranked No. 26 in the nation.
UCLA’s next match is on March 22 when the team seeks revenge in a non-conference match against Fresno State (9-4), which upset the Bruins back on Jan. 23 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Indoor Qualifier.
