Southern Lights, a coffee shop in the Court of Sciences Student Center, reopened Thursday after the store flooded in November.

UCLA officials shut down the store when water that flooded the ground floor tested positive for sewage-related bacteria. Officials reopened the store after the flooding stopped, but have not determined the source of the leak.

The UCLA Office of Environmental Health and Safety and UCLA Capital Programs worked with Associated Students UCLA Facilities Management to locate the leak, said Jennie Wung, environmental health programs manager for EH&S.

In November and December, ASUCLA Facilities Management tore down walls and flooring in Southern Lights, shut down irrigation and placed cameras in surrounding pipes, but ultimately could not pinpoint the source of the leak, said Cindy Bolton, ASUCLA Food Services director.

Bolton said Southern Lights brought in an average daily profit of about $1,200 prior to closure. She added she is unaware how much the repairs will cost ASUCLA.

Bob Williams, executive director of ASUCLA, said ASUCLA insurance may cover some of the repair costs.
