310 area code will need to be dialed to make local
calls

Starting July 26, all residents with a 310 area code will need
to dial four extra numbers to make local calls due to the
increasing population of Los Angeles and the need for more
telephone numbers.

To make calls within the area, which includes UCLA and the
stretch from Malibu to Rancho Palos Verdes, residents must
additionally dial 1-310 before the regular phone number. Because
there is a depletion of numbers with the 310 area code, there will
be another change that will occur within the area as well. Going
into effect Aug. 26 is the addition of a 424 area code which will
be distributed to new customers.

“I guess I’ll get used to it, but it just seems kind
of unnecessary since I’m already in my home area code,”
said Jackie Rafii, a second-year undeclared student and resident of
Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Public Utilities
Commission said as of this week about 1.88 million 310 numbers
remain available. At least 5.3 million numbers were in use or
unavailable as of June 2005.
