Outage leaves more than 1,000 Westwood residents without power

More than 1,300 students and Westwood residents are without power after an outage in the North Village late Sunday night.

Power went out on Landfair Avenue about 11:30 p.m. and around midnight on Midvale Avenue.

An LADWP maintenance worker on the scene said an electric conductor exploded underneath Strathmore Drive and Levering Avenue, causing the outage. He said it would take about two to three hours to repair as of 12:45 a.m.

The cause of the explosion is unknown.

Power went out on Landfair Avenue for about five minutes twice on Sunday afternoon. Workers said they don’t know whether the explosion caused the outages during the day.

Ruby Shi, a fourth-year physics student, said she was in an elevator in her apartment building on Midvale Avenue when the power went off during the night. She said firefighters rescued her within five minutes of her call.
