The No. 5 UCLA women’s golf team commenced play in the
tough-to-say, tough-to-spell Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational held at
famed Sahalee Golf and Country Club in Redmond, Wash.Â
The Bruins finished the first round of the three-round
tournament with a cumulative total of 9-over-par, which landed them
alone in third place and two shots ahead of No. 3 Arizona in the
15-team field.
All teams are trailing No. 4 California after its 3-under-par in
the first round, the only team to shoot a sub-par round in the
tournament thus far.
Cal was led by Sophie Andersson, who resides atop the
leaderboard after an opening round three-under-par 69.
For the Bruins, sophomore Susie Mathews and All-American junior
Charlotte Mayorkas both posted top-10 finishes individually.
Mathews is tied for fourth place after firing a one-under-par 71
in the opening round, the only Bruin to have a round under
par. After shooting a one-over-par 37 on her front nine,
Mathews birdied three consecutive holes in the middle of the back
nine en route to shooting two-under-par during her last nine
holes.
Mayorkas shot an even-par 72 in her first round, compiling two
birdies opposite two bogeys, and is tied for seventh place entering
Tuesday’s round.
Highly touted freshman Hannah Jun, competing in her third
collegiate tournament, shot a 5-over-par 77 in her first round and
is tied for 33rd place. After a rocky four-over- par front nine
that featured three bogeys and a double bogey, Jun righted her ship
on the back nine, shooting a one-over par 37.Â
Senior Bridget Dwyer also posted a 77 and is tied for 33rd place
along side Jun.
Senior Gina Umeck rounded out the Bruins’ squad, finishing
in a tie for 45th place at seven-over-par.
Second round action is scheduled to continue Tuesday in
Washington.
