The TWA Flight 800 disaster claimed yet another life from the
UCLA campus community. Eugene "Gene" Silverman, a tax attorney and
instructor at UCLA Extension, died along with his wife and two
daughters in the July 17 crash.
Before his death, Silverman was credited with making the
Extension "Tax Controversy Conference" into a significant event for
tax attorneys across the state.
"In the weeks prior to the disaster, Gene was doing his usual
terrific job of setting up the latest version of the Institute,
striving to make the event bigger and better than ever," explained
Ric Shaffran of the UCLA Extension Department of Business and
Management.
This year’s conference, scheduled to take place Oct. 23, will be
dedicated to Silverman.
"We at UCLA Extension mourn the loss of this dedicated and
much-beloved attorney and his wife and two daughters," Shaffran
said. "We are honored to dedicate this year’s conference to his
memory."
Silverman, born in Atlantic City, N.J., was admitted to the bar
in 1966 after receiving his law degree from Villanova
University.
During his career, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service
Office of Chief Counsel, U.S. Department of Justice Tax Division,
and the U.S. Attorney’s Office Tax Division. Since 1975, he was
with the Los Angeles law firm of De Castro, West & Chodrow,
Inc.
Silverman was leaving for a trip to Italy with his wife, Etta,
and his daughters, Jamie and Candace. The Silvermans resided in Bel
Air.
