The number five meant a couple of different things to the No. 8 UCLA sand volleyball team this weekend.

UCLA opened the competition on Saturday morning in dominating fashion, ending its fifth game of the season by completing a 5-0 sweep against No. 19 Cal State Bakersfield (9-6) to move to 5-0 for the season.

But merely four hours later, UCLA’s momentum from its five-game undefeated run would hit a wall. One that came from the fifth team UCLA played this season, No. 5 Long Beach State (8-2).

The 2013 national champions made short work of the Bruins, taking UCLA’s second matchup of the day 5-0. The only bright spark for UCLA came from its No. 3 doubles pair of junior Julie Consani and sophomore Laurel Weaver who managed to take the first set 22-20, but fell in the next two, 20-22, 13-15, while every other UCLA pairing was swept in two sets.

The Bruins (5-1) resume competition this weekend, as they head to Stanford to compete in the Stanford Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
