The Daily Bruin captured 16 awards at the California
Intercollegiate Press Association’s annual convention this
weekend.

The press association, which presents awards in the fields of
broadcast, radio and print journalism, said it was not surprised by
The Bruin’s achievements.

"Traditionally, the Daily Bruin has been one of the top
newspapers in the state, if not No. 1," said Tim Meehan, the
student president of the association and editor in chief of the
Daily Aztec at San Diego State University.

"The judges said that The Bruin is a quality paper and that is
of no surprise to us. We knew that."

Among the honors The Bruin garnered were first place awards for
the paper’s Arts and Entertainment and Sports sections.

"It’s incredibly exciting to be validated by a respected
association and receive this acknowledgement," said Matea Gold,
editor in chief of The Bruin. "But I think our true reward is
seeing the outstanding product this staff puts out, and knowing
that this is really one of the top college papers in the
country."

The Bruin emerged from the convention with a final overall award
of second place for general excellence and best daily paper in the
state. In other events, The Bruin received top honors in best news
series, best human interest article, best sports news article and
best news illustration.
