New LA Mobile app incorporates technology with public transportation

Westwood residents and commuters are now able to buy tickets for the Commuter Express bus system on California’s first mobile ticketing app for public transportation.

The Los Angeles Department of Transportation launched the LA Mobile app, which allows bus riders to check schedules and purchase tickets for the Commuter Express and DASH bus systems, at a public event Tuesday.

LA Mobile is free to use and can be downloaded on iPhone or Android devices, according to a press release from Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Though DASH buses do not run to Westwood, three Commuter Express lines – 431, 534 and 573 – come to the area.

People using the app can show their screens to the driver to be let on board.

The app is a year-long demonstration project. Currently, riders can only purchase 20 rides or 31-day passes, and the app does not include discounts for students, seniors, or disabled people.
