The Undergraduate Students Associated Council Election Board is accepting applications for committee staff positions until the end of next week.
The Election Board is in charge of running the USAC elections in the spring of the academic year. Its responsibilities include overseeing elections-related events and marketing, and enforcing elections regulations. Board members are required to be unbiased to ensure a fair election. At UCLA, multiple slates, similar to political parties, typically run candidates, and elections can become heated and polarizing.
The board subcommittees accepting applications are marketing, investigations, endorsements and the executive committee.
Shagun Kabra, USAC Election Board chair, said new board members will assist directors with their work in their respective committees.
“(Applicants) have to be neutral, and I want people who are hardworking and dedicated to making a difference and to (improving) USAC,” Kabra said.
Kabra also said the Election Board is working on improving USAC elections, including through Election Code reforms.
“We will be looking at ways to make expense accounts more feasible,” Kabra said. “I also want to look into improvements in endorsements, investigations and making the Election Code more consistent with bylaws because it isn’t updated with constitutional reforms.”
USAC President Avinoam Baral said he looks forward to working with whoever is picked to be on the Election Board staff.
“As someone who’s run in two elections, I know how important it is to have an Election Board that is highly competent, good at organizing and setting the stage for a fair election,” Baral said.
Applications are available at on the Election Board website and are due by Dec. 13. The Election Board will conduct interviews after it has reviewed the applications, and final decisions will be made by the second week of winter quarter, Kabra said.
